Action Against Islamophobia, an initiative of the Australian National Imams Council (ANIC), delivered an engaging Islamophobia Awareness Workshop to Young Muslim Brothers in Lakemba.
The workshop explored the different forms of Islamophobia, how they manifest in everyday life, and most importantly, how young Muslims can recognise, respond to and report incidents of discrimination and hate.
The response from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with young people recognising the importance of standing up against Islamophobia, challenging negative stereotypes and speaking out against discrimination.
Here’s what some participants had to say:
“The seminar really brought to light all the different kinds of Islamophobia, and more importantly showed us what to do in those situations.”
I thoroughly enjoyed and benefited from the Islamophobia seminar as it answered many questions I had about life practising Islam in Australia, such as what really defines Islamophobia, who are most likely to fall victim to it, why there is a rampant growth of Islamophobia today and, most importantly, what to do when I see an “Islamophobic incident unfold in front of me.”
Through workshops like these, Action Against Islamophobia continues to empower young Muslims with the knowledge, confidence and practical tools to challenge Islamophobia and help build safer, more inclusive communities.
